The Fall Collection
Celebrating 10 years of assorted Ovum recordings, Josh Wink mixes a wonderful blend of the best his label has to offer. A tranquil and beautifully intertwined journey into modern dance that along the way takes in house, techno, jazz, ambient and, of course, Wink's trademark acid overloads en route.
The label's first compilation since 1997, this comprehensive round up is further testament to a decade of glittering breadth and depth. Josh, with partner Philadelphia partner King Britt, architects behind a label that stylishly negotiates dance music's universal language of deep, soulful and trippy metronomic rhythms.
Opening with "Elu On Mi Ulu", an ingenious percussive affair from the Rulers Of The Deep, the tempos meld into David Alvarado's deeply hypnotic string-laden epic, "Klugh", before the Dennis F remix of Aaron Carl's autobiographic "My House" is transformed into a soulful foray embellished with elements of Scuba's "Heaven".
Wink's is joined by poet Ursula Rucker on the deeply satisfying "Sixth Sense" - another lazy jazz dancer that oozes of sophistication, and is a far cry from his previous higher states of consciousness. While rarely heard recordings from the Universal Agents ("West Of Athens"), Alexkid, and Yann Fontaine mix and match the tempos and styles, with a mere hint of acid supplied not by Wink but D'Julz on the aptly named "Acid Tricks" - squelching 303 action with rugged underground beats, tribal percussion and a mantra-like lyrical hook.
Ovum's love for deep jazz and modern beats has led their music to become a blueprint amalgamation of new and old that echoes almost all musical influences. Little wonder they've risen through the ranks to represent all that is cool, credible and inventive in the modern dance world.
